Yamaha Acoustic Electrics Guitars
The first Japanese guitar I ever played was an acoustic Yamaha. It was in the mid 60’s if I remember correctly so they hadn't been exporting guitars to the U.S.for a very long time. The neck was so thick; it was like holding a fence post. I much preferred my Les Paul and thought about some comment I had heard regarding Japanese guitars and other products for that matter. It went something like this--The Japanese are good at copying but they are not innovative. I played my way through the next decade or two with that preconceived notion that all Japanese guitars were hard to play and had thick necks. Every time I had the chance I tried some brand of Japanese guitar and what a surprise! The necks were now streamlined, the action was great and if that were not enough, they looked as good as
U.S. guitars! Yamaha acoustic guitar production shifted from
Japan to
Taiwan; although some of the high-end acoustic electric guitars are still made in
Japan.
