Harmony Acoustic Guitars
Harmony guitar was one of several guitar manufacturing companies based in Chicago around the turn of the century. The Harmony was a budget priced guitar and the company also built lower end guitars for many other companies. It became the world’s largest guitar manufacturer and experienced its peak year in 1965. Foreign competition brought about the end of the company. Other companies acquired the Harmony name.
When Japanese guitars first appeared on the American market they were shoddy and hard to play. As time went on the Japanese were able to add quality to their guitars and presented a great deal of competition to the American companies causing many of them to either close or move their operations to some more competitive location. The Harmony guitar company is doing nothing at the present time, but does maintain an office in Elk Grove Village, Illinois. Many of the Harmony acoustic guitars are now collectible.
