Gibson SG Electric Guitars
In the early sixties many teenagers began to buy and play electric guitars. Unfortunately for Gibson these young pickers were gravitating toward the flashy Stratocasters, Jaguars and Jazzmasters. The Strat dominated the 80’s and as the decade came to a close Gibson found more success by turning to their classic designs. The reasoning goes that as these guitarists grew out of the teen age pop scene they rediscovered Gibsons. The three pickup SG Custom replaced the Les Paul in 1962 and remained in production until 1979. The original 60’s style was reissued in 1986. There is a lot of interesting historic facts about the SG guitar and how the company managed to sneak it in to replace the Les Paul without the man, Les Paul's knowledge and he insisted his name be taken off. For a few years the SG (which stands for solid guitar) displayed the Les Paul name as Gibson had an abundance of truss rod nameplates and logos already made. I can only imagine the anger of Les at that time! These dates are general. but gives an idea of the birth of the SG guitar. It is a fine instrument. The SG electric guitar is the guitar of choice by Angus Young of AC-DC.
