Gibson ES Electric Guitars
Gibson has made a large number of archtop guitars over the years. One of Gibsons most luxurious models ever made available to the public was the Citation. According to Gibson it was the finest electric archtop guitar in the world and was available only by special order. Gibson started taking orders in 1971 and by 1984 only twenty had been made. That was a time when 80's rock was popular and the archtops weren't conducive to playing that particular music.
Chet Atkins moved from Gretsch to Gibson which prompted Gibson to come out with a redesign of the Gretsch Country Gentleman. Chet Atkins has been a fine endorser. His name on the guitar sells.
As a leader in the production of archtop guitars Gibson has provided guitars for many of the top jazz musicians. Most all of the jazz guitarists in the country have played or continue to play Gibson archtops. In 1958 Gibson launched the ES335, a model that successfully combined the solid body and the acoustic. Guitarists are usually plagued with distorted feedback when they play an ordinary acoustic/electric.Feedback is caused by guitar pickups picking up their own sound from the PA system and feeding it back. Some rockers work this feedback into their solos with much success, but Larry Carlton, Alan Holdsworth and Barney Kessel do not. The semi-hollow ES335 creates much less feedback than a regular acoustic/electric guitar which makes it desirable to certain musicians.
