Fender Guitar Amplifiers
Leo Fender is known for his innovative guitars but his primary passion was amplifiers. Fender amps were “king of the hill” until the late 60’s when powerful arena amps, such as Marshalls, were introduced. My first Fender amp was a Bandmaster. I bought it in the 60’s. It had four 10 inch speakers and although it was heavy, I was younger and stronger then and I loved it. I am presently using my sixth Fender amp. It is called “The Twin/Evil Twin.” It is a great amp. I love most everything about it. The distortion is really top-notch. In spite of the heavy duty wheels I had installed, there were some times when I had to carry it up/down fairly long stairways. It was a major factor in my retirement as a weekend musician—all ninety pounds of it.
In 1987 Fender acquired Sunn, a company whose past endorsees included the Who, Jimi Hendrix and the Rolling Stones. It also made available the Sunn workshop in Lake Oswego, Oregon. Today some of the world’s best know guitarists work with the Fender custom shop in Corona, CA. In 1991 Fender moved its custom amplifier shop to Scottsdale, Arizona. With guitar amplifiers Fender is one of the world’s leading producers. Its research and development staff has pioneered many of the technological advancements that have made Fender the world’s number one guitar amplifier producer.
At one time all electronic circuits were powered by vacuum tubes. As technology had developed solid-state electronics has replaced tubes, that is except in guitar amplifiers. Tubes produce the best sounds for guitars. Most of your favorite guitarists record and play with tube amps, providing that sweet natural overdrive that Fender is known for in it's guitar amplifiers.
