Bass Guitar Lessons
Learning to play the bass guitar is a great idea and taking a few lessons will help you jump start your new hobby. It has happened in many of the bands I’ve been in. For one reason or another the band needs to find a bass player. There must be three or four guitarists waiting in the wings—waiting for something to open up for them. Somebody makes the suggestion, “I wonder if guitarist, Joe Sixpack, would fill in on bass until we find a bass player. After all they say that anyone who plays guitar should be able to learn bass in a very short time.” In case you don’t know, the four bass strings are tuned exactly like the heaviest four strings on the guitar. So if you know the heaviest four guitar strings it follows that…. Joe agrees to try to fill the void and before long he is an official bass player. He may feel that it is something that has been thrust upon him and that it will only be temporary but he may be wrong.
If you think the bass is easier to play than a regular guitar you may be correct, but don’t tell that to Billy Sheehan, Flea, or Ronnie Fudoli. They do play chords; they play double stops and harmony and they play well. They have taken their craft to a new level. They can do more with four strings than even a good guitarist can do with six. If you play a lead instrument, having a highly skilled bassist accompanying you can make you sound like a virtuoso. A good bass player is able to blend and play with the drummer and together, become one solid driving rhythm section. In fact, truly good bass players are difficult to find and greatly appreciated by any accomplished musician!
